Simultaneous determination of the U-Pb age of zircon and concentration of titanium in a single analysis spot, using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry with laser ablation sample introduction, produces paired age and temperature data of zircon crystallisation, potentially revealing time-temperature ($$t-T$$) histories for evolved magma. The Kurobegawa granite, central Japan, contains abundant mafic magmatic enclaves (MMEs). We applied this method to evaluate MMEs and their host (enclosing) granites. Cooling behaviour common to both MMEs and host rocks was found between 1.5 and 0.5 Ma. Rapid cooling from the zircon crystallisation temperature to the closure temperature of biotite K-Ar system was within $$sim$$1 million year. Combining the obtained $$t-T$$ paths of MMEs and host rocks with petrological information can provide insights into magma chamber processes. This suggests that MME flotation, migration, and spread through the magma chamber ceased at 1.5-0.5 Ma, indicating the emplacement age of the Kurobegawa granitic pluton, as no large-scale reheating episodes have occurred since then.

Nitride fuel pins containing inert matrix such as ZrN and TiN were fabricated for the irradiation test at JMTR, aiming at understanding irradiation behavior of nitride fuel for transmutation of minor actinides. Minor actinides are surrogated by plutonium in the present fuel pin. This report describes the preparation and characterization of fuel pellets, and fabrication of fuel pins. The irradiation for 11 cycles from May 2002 to November 2004 at JMTR was completed without any failure of fuel pins.

Preparation of TiO$$_{2}$$ nanoparticles by pulsed laser ablation; Ambient pressure dependence of crystallization

Matsubara, Masakazu*; Yamaki, Tetsuya; Ito, Hisayoshi; Abe, Hiroaki*; Asai, Keisuke*

Japanese Journal of Applied Physics, Part 2, 42(5A), p.L479 - L481, 2003/05

Pulsed laser ablation with a KrF excimer laser was used to prepare fine particles of titanium dioxide (TiO$$_{2}$$). The ablation in an atmosphere of Ar and O$$_{2}$$ (5:5) at total pressures of $$geq$$ 1 Torr led to the formation of TiO$$_{2}$$ nanoparticles composed of anatase and rutile structures without any suboxides. The weight fraction of the rutile/anatase crystalline phases was controlled by the pressure of the Ar/O$$_{2}$$ gas. The TiO$$_{2}$$ nanoparticles had a spherical shape and their size, ranging from 10 and 14 nm, also appeared to be dependent on the ambient pressure.

Titanium oxide film was coated on entire surface of a V-4Cr-4Ti alloy to reduce hydrogen absorption at low temperature region. The film consisted with a mixture of TiO2 and TiC. The content of TiO$$_{2}$$ was approximately 80%. The hydrogen absorption rate of Ti-oxide coated V-alloy largely decreased with increase of the film thickness. In the case of the film with a thickness of 0.5 micron, the absorption rate was fifty times smaller than that of non-coated V-alloy at the absorption temperature of 573 K.

Refractory materials such as zirconium, niobium and titanium alloys with excellent corrosion resistance in boiling nitric acid have been selected for use as structural materials of spent fuel reprocessing equipment. The fatigue crack growth rates of these materials were investigated by load control tests as a function of the stress intensity factor range in boiling 3N nitric acid and in air at room temperature. The fracture surfaces were observed by SEM. The fatigue crack growth rates of zirconium and niobium were enhanced in boiling nitric acid compared with those in air at room temperature. Acceleration effect due to corrosion fatigue was not observed in the crack growth of Ti-5Ta alloy. The fracture surfaces of Ti-5Ta alloy showed the ductile striation in both environments. On the other hand, the fracture surfaces of niobium represented the fatigue striation in air and the brittle striation due to corrosion in nitric acid. The fracture surfaces of zirconium in nitric acid showed brittle fracture and the ductile fracture related to stress corrosion cracking.

Preparation of epitaxial TiO$$_{2}$$ films by PLD for photocatalyst applications

Yamaki, Tetsuya; Sumita, Taishi; Yamamoto, Shunya; Miyashita, Atsumi

Journal of Crystal Growth, 237-239(Part1), p.574 - 579, 2002/04

Pulsed laser deposition (PLD) with a KrF excimer laser was used to prepare epitaxial TiO$$_{2}$$ films on a (0001) sapphire substrate. The crystalline structure and surface morphology of the films were then investigated as a function of the laser power density in the PLD. X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy results showed that the films were composed of the (100) oriented rutile phase with a small amount of the (001) oriented anatase. The anatase-to-rutile ratio in such phase-mixed films was controlled by the laser power; the ratio increased as the power density decreased. From atomic force microscopy observations, the film deposited at the lowest power was found to have a rough surface consisting of coarse grains. This film exhibited the best photocatalytic performance during the decomposition of the organic dyes possibly due to the maximum relative content of anatase and the large surface area.

Morphology change in rutile TiO2 thin films on sapphire substrate prepared by pulsed laser deposition under reduced oxygen envirnment was investigated as a function of film thickness, temperature and cooling treatment with AFM, XRD, and SEM/EDX. In case of 5 nm thick films, morphology strongly deponds on annealing and cooling treatments. Formation model of TiO2 particles on sapphire substrate is proposed based on instability of the substrate at elevated temperature.

Corrosion fatigue of refractory materials with corrosion resistance to boiling nitric acid

Motooka, Takafumi; Kiuchi, Kiyoshi

Proceedings of the 2nd International Conference on Environment Sensitive Cracking and Corrosion Damage (ESCCD 2001), p.374 - 378, 2001/11

Refractory metals such as Zr, Nb and Ti alloys with the excellent corrosion resistance in boiling nitric acid have been selected for structural materials of spent fuel reprocessing equipment. On this study, the fatigue crack growth rate of these materials was investigated by load control tests as a function of the stress intensity in boiling nitric acid and in air at room temperature. The fracture surface was observed by scanning electron microscopy. The crack growth rate of Zr and Nb was enhanced in boiling nitric acid compared with that in air at room temperature. Acceleration effect due to corrosion fatigue was not observed in the crack growth of Ti-5Ta alloy. The fracture surfaces of Ti-5Ta alloy showed the ductile striation in both environments. On the other hand, the fracture surfaces of Nb showed the ductile striation in air and brittle striation in nitric acid. The anodic dissolution was interpreted to the acceleration factor on corrosion fatigue of Nb. The fracture surfaces of Zr in nitric acid showed both brittle and ductile fracture with fluted pattern due to SCC.

A new type of TiO$$_{2}$$ nanosheet-organic complex multilayer film was successfully prepared by the Langmuir-Blodgett technique. Surface pressure-area curves demonstrated that a stable monolayer of dioctadecyldimethylammonium bromide (DODAB) was formed on an aqueous suspension of TiO$$_{2}$$ nanosheets derived from an exfoliated layered titanate, H$$_{x}$$Ti$$_{2-x/4}$$$$_{x/4}$$O$$_{4}$$・H$$_{2}$$O (x$$sim$$0.7; □, vacancy). The hybrid monolayer of the ammonium amphiphiles and the TiO$$_{2}$$ nanosheet was quantitatively transferred onto a hydrophobic quartz plate to form a multilayer film. X-ray diffraction measurements confirmed the formation of an ordered structure of DODAB/TiO$$_{2}$$ with an interlayer distance of 3.4 nm.

Journal of Materials Science Letters, 21(1), p.33 - 35, 2001/01

We showed the effects of 200 keV F$$^{+}$$ implantation in TiO$$_{2}$$ rutile single crystals followed by the thermal annealing. The isochronal annealing at 573 and 873 K for 5 h for each step led to the formation of an F-doped TiO$$_{2}$$ phase, along with the recovery of the radiation damage and the simultaneous impurity diffusion. This phase was identified to be a TiO$$_{2-x}$$F$$_{x}$$ compound with x = 0.0039 in the outmost region as determined by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (probably the first few atomic layers). The fluorination of TiO$$_{2}$$ leads to interesting characteristics and opens avenues towards photoelectronic films with various applications. In addition, our method enabled dopants to be introduced in a controlled manner at specific locations to realize impurity concentration gradients in TiO$$_{2}$$.
